  • Wed 24 Aug – Rinca

Erwin our guide picks us up at the hotel early in the morning and takes us to our boat for the day “Tiga Dara” (Three Brothers).  The boat is loaded with coke, sprite, lunch and snorkling equipment.  It’s a 2 hour sail to Rinca against the tide and we have very nice weather.  We see a turtle in the water.

At Rinca there are already a fair number of boats moored.  We meet our guide, Jack, who gets us in front of some dragons quickly.  We make a tour of the island and spot dragons on nests, next to tests and also the birds that dig the actual nests.  We also spot a wild chicken that legs it as soon as we get near.

There are some yachts here but not many.  Opa later says that piracy is still a real problem in some parts of Indonesia.

On the way back we stop at two snorkling places and shoot some video.  The star fish are amazing – they really look like bath toys.  There is a pale pink fish that comes up to you to try to scare you.  We spot a really nice pipe fish.

Our driver picks us up and takes us to Golo Hilltop which is probably the best accommodation we stay at this holiday.  The view is also great.

After visiting the company that is going to take us to Rinca tomorrow we go to a restaurant and we all order pizza!

  • Mon 22 Aug – Sanur

Today we go to a different beach closer to our hotel.  It’s not better and it has more people hassling us.  The only plus is that there is a turtle rescue centre nearby.

This morning some of the resort boats are out sailing.

In the afternoon we go back to our first beach and the low tide means we can walk to the little island.  There is even a clear sandy path through the plants to get there.  Alex and Gerd get there first and after that Alex guides the girls there.

While we’re there lots of fishermen turn up to catch fish.

Alex and Emma are making drawings and here is a picture of one of the dogs on the beach.  There seems to be a whole dog family frequenting this place.

Some boys are running kites on the beach.  They don’t look very big but they are at least man-high.

The offerings make great sources of food to birds.  Normally little sparrows, but in this case a white dove.
